Weight Loss Is Not Linear

I LOVE this chart as a generalized visual for what happens as you begin the ketogenic diet. NOT everyone’s “chart” would look exactly like this if you were to map out your weigh ins weekly.  Timelines for change will vary, the line itself will vary, basically everything will vary because every human is unique.  Your body composition, stressors, hormones, genetics, everything is different from the next person.

As you shift your lifestyle and eating habits, there is a TON of change going on inside of your body that isn’t directly or immediately represented on outside of your body – weight loss is NOT LINEAR.

Take a look at my weight chart from Dec 2017 – Aug 2018. Even though I preach to stay off the scale, I weighed every 3-4 days to use it as a teaching tool for you guys.  The trend is similar to the idea of the one above, but it’s also very different.  I had some very immediate drops on the scale (bloat, mostly) and then it APPEARED to plateau, but that’s when the real initial work was being done.  If I gave up then, like I see so many do, I would still be complaining about the extra 25 lbs I went on to lose after that “plateau”.  And then you can see all kinds of yoyo motions in my chart, but the general trend is downward.

The key takeaway here, though, is that you’re not going to magically lose tons of weight in a short period of time and weight loss doesn’t act like a light switch. You can’t go from putting excessive amounts of crap into your body to making better choices for 5 days and expect to drop 20 lbs of fat. BUT…you’ll be on your way, headed in the right direction.

Some people do experience an initial drop in pounds on the scale, but that is likely mostly water weight. Then, in what may feel like a plateau, you’re actually doing a lot of internal transitioning, setting yourself up for the good stuff. (some people DO NOT experience an initial drop in weight – don’t get frustrated. That number on the scale is generally irrelevant, especially at first)

As you continue to CONSISTENTLY make better food choices OVER TIME, your body composition will start to shift, the pounds on the scale will begin to catch up with your efforts and you WILL start seeing – and just as importantly FEELING – the health benefits from the ketogenic diet. KEEP GOING!!! You did not get to where you are now in a week and you sure as heck aren’t gonna be 50 lbs lighter in a week.

YOU’VE TOTALLY GOT THIS!  If you need help/advice/encouragement – message me and I’m here for you!
